The Best Way to Experience the Otago Central Rail Trail
Choosing the right Central Otago rail trail package can be the difference between a good trip and one you talk about for years. At SheBikesHeBikes, we’ve built our packages around what actually matters, quality bikes, comfortable accommodation that fits hour budget, and expert local knowledge from a team of locals with over 15 years of experience. Based right in Clyde at the start of the Otago Central Rail Trail, we know this corner of New Zealand better than anyone.
Whether you’re planning a one-day adventure or a multi-day journey from Clyde to Middlemarch, we have a trail package to suit your group, your pace, and your budget. Our self-guided tours give you the freedom to ride at your own speed, while we take care of every detail, from luggage transfers to accommodation bookings to return transport.
The Otago Central Rail Trail is one of New Zealand’s Great Rides, a 152 km trail winding through the dramatic Central Otago landscape from Clyde to Middlemarch. Ancient rock formations, historic stone bridges, tussock-covered high country, and the dramatic Poolburn Gorge are just some of the highlights along the way.
The trail is graded Grade 1 (easiest), making it accessible to all cyclists. That said, the best Otago Central rail trail experience comes from being well prepared, the right bikes for the terrain, a well-planned itinerary, and accommodation booked at the right spots along the route. That’s exactly what our packages are designed to deliver.
Central Otago’s continental climate means long summer days, clear skies, and some of the most spectacular light you’ll find anywhere on New Zealand’s trail network. Spring and autumn offer cooler riding temperatures, both excellent seasons for an Otago rail trail ride.
Otago Rail Trail Day Tours – Ride More, Organise Less
Not everyone has four or five days to commit to the full trail. Our one-day tours let you experience the very best sections of the Otago Central Rail Trail without needing to plan accommodation or logistics. We handle the shuttles and bikes; you just show up and ride.
Popular one-day options include the Clutha Loop Ride from Clyde (29 km, following the river track into Alexandra), the Poolburn Gorge Classic and Golden Progress from Omakau (@ 30 km of cycling), and our DeVineCycle – a winery cycle tour through Central Otago’s award-winning wine country.
Plan Your Otago Rail Trail Itinerary – 3, 4 or 5 Days
Most riders complete the trail in four days, with three and five day options available with the itinerary shaped by fitness level and how much time you want to spend exploring each town along the route. Three days suits fit cyclists who want to cover ground. Five days allows for rest stops, side explorations, and a proper taste of Otago’s small towns, historic pubs, and high-country landscapes.
Our multi-day packages include bike hire, daily luggage transfers between accommodation, and return transport back to Clyde at the end of your ride. All accommodation is pre-selected for quality and location, no hunting around for a bed at the end of a long day on the trails. We’ve done that part for you.

Do you offer packages on other Central Otago trails?
Yes! In addition to the Otago Central Rail Trail, we offer packages on the Lake Dunstan Trail, the Clutha Gold Trail, and the Roxburgh Gorge Trail.
